Knowing better. Doing better.

Dr. Carli Blau, PhD, LCSW, is a New York–based sex therapist and the creator of The Blau Method.

Her point of view

Desire isn't a malfunction or a hormone. It's what's left when relational patterns go unworked. Insight alone doesn't fix them. Accountability does.

Dr. Blau helps people close the gap between knowing better and doing better, in their relationships, their sex lives, and themselves.

Short

Dr. Carli Blau, PhD, LCSW, is a New York–based sex therapist and creator of The Blau Method, an accountability-based framework that turns insight into lasting change. She founded Boutique Psychotherapy in Manhattan and is the author of the forthcoming book How Dare You. She posts as @SexDocCarli.

Medium

Dr. Carli Blau, PhD, LCSW, is a sex therapist and relationship expert who works on one question: why do people know better and still not do better? A licensed clinician since 2015, she treats desire discrepancies, sexual pain and dysfunction, infertility stress, and the quiet disconnection of long-term partnership.

Her work draws on differentiation theory, the idea that intimacy grows when partners stop needing each other to regulate their feelings. That is the foundation of The Blau Method, her framework for turning insight into behavioral change. She is the founder of Boutique Psychotherapy, a Manhattan group practice, and The Blau Method Collective, a membership community.

Dr. Blau holds degrees from Syracuse University, Columbia University, and Widener University, and has published research on sexual esteem. Her first book, How Dare You, is forthcoming.

Long

Dr. Carli Blau, PhD, LCSW, has spent more than a decade in the therapy room watching smart, self-aware people stay stuck. They can explain their patterns in detail. They just can't change them. Her work is built for that gap.

A doctoral-level sex therapist licensed in New York, New Jersey, and Florida, Dr. Blau treats sexual dysfunction and pain, desire discrepancies, infertility and trying-to-conceive stress, and the drift that sets into long-term relationships. Her clinical grounding is in couples work and differentiation theory, and she argues that low desire is rarely a hormone problem. It is usually a relationship pattern no one has named.

She created The Blau Method to move people from insight to accountability, and The Blau Method Collective to give them a place to practice it. She also founded Boutique Psychotherapy, a private-pay group practice at 303 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, where her clinicians work at the intersection of mental health and women's hormone health.

Before becoming a therapist, Dr. Blau studied television, radio, and film at Syracuse University. She went on to earn her MSW at Columbia University and complete doctoral study in human sexuality at Widener University. She has published research on sexual esteem and speaks on sex, empowerment, and chronic illness for organizations including the Endometriosis Foundation of America and The Breasties.

Her first book, How Dare You, is for women in long-term relationships who are tired of being told the problem is them.

What she talks about

  • Your AI is validating you into a worse relationship.

Why constant agreement from apps, feeds, and chatbots keeps people stuck, and why growth needs friction that loves you.

  • Low desire isn't a hormone problem.

Why most desire loss comes from unworked relational patterns, not a broken body.

  • Stop asking your partner to make you feel safe.

How intimacy grows when partners stop managing each other's emotions.

  • Why self-aware people stay stuck.

Insight doesn't create change. Accountability does.

  • Boring isn't the problem.

What "we're disconnected" usually means in a long-term relationship, and what couples can do about it.

  • Sex through fertility, illness, and hormonal change.

Keeping intimacy alive through trying to conceive, chronic illness, and the body's transitions.

Questions to ask her

  1. You say low desire usually isn't a hormone problem. What is it, then?
  2. Why do people who understand their patterns so well still repeat them?
  3. Is AI making us worse at relationships?
  4. What is differentiation, and why does it matter in bed?
  5. "We're not fighting, we're just disconnected." Where do you start?
  6. What's one thing couples believe about desire that's hurting them?
  7. How does infertility change a couple's sex life, and how do they get it back?
  8. What does accountability look like between two partners, day to day?
